West Bengal governor M K Narayanan on 30th June resigned, becoming the fourth person occupying the gubernatorial post to put in his papers since the NDA government prodded some of the governors appointed during UPA rule to quit. His resignation comes at a time when the 1955 batch IPS officer (retired) is facing a CBI inquiry into the purchase of VVIP helicopter from AgustaWestland.
Mayankote Kelath (M K) Narayanan took over as the Governor of Bengal on 24 January 2010 and his term would have ended on 23 January, 2015, if he would not have resigned. But only a week after CBI interrogated the Governor in AgustaWestland helicopter purchase case, he decided to submit his papers to the country's President.
The 80-year-old officer was the Director of Intelligence Branch (IB) and used to share a cordial relation with Bengal government. Nagaland governor Ashwani Kumar, Uttar Pradesh governor B L Joshi and Chhattisgarh governor Shekhar Dutt have put in their papers in the last few days.
All the four governors who have resigned so far are either former IPS or IAS officers. Joshi and Kumar are former IPS officers while Dutt is a former IAS officer.
