Union Water Resources Minister Harish Rawat was on Saturday sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, succeeding Vijay Bahuguna who was asked by the Congress high command to step down in a bid to boost the party’s prospects ahead of the April-May Lok Sabha polls.
Mr. Rawat, 65, was administered the oath of office by Governor Aziz Qureshi at Raj Bhawan lawns along with a 11-member Cabinet all of whom were Ministers in the Bahuguna government.
Mr. Rawat was a strong contender for the post of the Chief Minister. Massive opposition was witnessed the CLP in 2012 when the Congress high command named Mr. Bahuguna Chief Minister. Mr. Rawat, who was later given the Water Resources portfolio, had shown discontent over the decision.
Mr. Bahuguna faced opposition from his own party MLAs after taking over as the Chief Minister. Mr. Bahuguna’s performance during and after the June disaster last year raised questions over his leadership. The slow rehabilitation work after the disaster proved to be detrimental for his tenure, sources said.
