Telangana will come into existence in June. The Union government has decided on June 2 as the “appointed day” for the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.
According to sources in the Union Home Ministry, the government has notified the Act to pave the way for the creation of the 29th State of the Union after President Pranab Mukherjee gave his assent last week to the bill for carving out Telangana from Andhra Pradesh.
However, elaborate preparatory works relating to personnel, finance and distribution of assets and liabilities remain to be done. The process involves mind-boggling paper work that could be a logistical nightmare. It took three months for the government to create Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh in November 2000.
Dwelling on the road ahead, Union Minister Jairam Ramesh — who was a key member of the Group of Ministers which crafted the Bill — told journalists here last week that the government had set up two committees in the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) to work on the nitty-gritty of allocating officers and staff from the Central and State pools.
